Gun lobbyist-turned-firearms minister Nicole McKee has lifted the lid on her Arms Act rewrite plans – but it’s much less radical than her critics anticipated.
She’s promising a “simpler law that’s logically structured, and has public safety at its core”. It will see police stripped of looking after the Firearms Safety Authority, with a new independent agency replacing it.
The controversial firearms registry remains, and eight new offences will be created, including for people who manufacture firearms with 3D printers.
