US news anchor Carissa Codel has become a viral sensation for turning online hate into social media gold.
In a response to body-shaming comments about her appearance, the Missouri journalist launched a series titled Reading Viewer Comments – delivering cruel remarks in her deadpan news anchor voice, straight to camera.
The series began in August and now spans 14 episodes, with the latest, posted on December 1, racking up more than two million views and over 200,000 likes on TikTok alone.
In it, Codel reads viewer insults like “shawty obese” and “no oink oink oink” while standing in front of a graphic showing the comment itself.
Across Facebook, Instagram and TikTok, her dry delivery and self-deprecating humour have struck a chord. She read one comment saying “built for breeding” before signing off with, “Tonight at 5,” prompting laughter both on and off camera.
