Political cartoonist Garrick Tremain, whose work sometimes sparked a heated response, has died in Queenstown, aged 84.

Tremain had been fighting a highly aggressive cancer, angiosarcoma. It was diagnosed in 2024, just weeks after the death of Tremain’s wife, Jill.

“I’ve had a bloody fantastic life,” Tremain told the Press a couple of months ago.

“I’m not agitated about this. I wish I wasn’t dying, but I’m still feeling good and full of energy. I think about how fortunate I was to be born in this country at this time,” Tremain said in the interview.
