RNZ chief executive Paul Thompson will stand down at the end of the year, after 13 years as the public broadcaster’s editor-in-chief.
RNZ board chair Dr Jim Mather announced the move on Friday. News of Thompson’s resignation was announced early, after Deputy Prime Minister David Seymour hinted at leadership changes coming for the public broadcaster.
Mather said Thompson advised the board of his plan in December. They were planning to tell staff, and confirm his departure, later this year.
On Friday, he wrote to staff, saying: “I am sharing this news with you today as there has been recent unhelpful external commentary about his future.”
