The transport minister is not ruling out going ahead with planned petrol tax increases, despite Kiwis’ pain at the pump.
Speaking to the transport select committee on Thursday, Chris Bishop said he understands it would be a “hard ask” for Kiwis to take on an increase of 12 cents per litre, but he will not rule it out.
The fuel tax is currently expected to rise 12 cents in 2027, then six cents in 2028, and four cents per year thereafter, according to a plan laid out by former transport minister Simeon Brown in 2024.
Ministers have said throughout this year’s fuel crisis that it will be “unlikely” to go ahead.
On Thursday Bishop maintained that it is unlikely, but said “it is possible, still possible”.
