A former champion bodybuilder who fulfilled a lifelong ambition of becoming a police officer has been sentenced to more than nine years in prison for historical sexual offending.
Brian Denys McFarlane, 56, was sentenced in the Hamilton District Court on Thursday to nine years and four months’ imprisonment after being found guilty of nine historical sexual offending charges.
McFarlane was once well known in bodybuilding circles, winning the Mr New Zealand Bodybuilding title in 2002 and Mr Natural Universe in 2017.
In 2019, Stuff profiled him after he graduated as the oldest member of his New Zealand Police recruit wing at the age of 50. At the time, the Hamilton gym owner described policing as a lifelong dream inspired by a television recruitment advertisement in the 1990s.
