Former Speaker of the House and Labour MP Adrian Rurawhe has died following a recent illness.
Rurawhe (Ngāti Apa, Whanganui), who served in parliament for more than a decade and became speaker in 2022, died after recently becoming unwell.
His whānau announced his death in a statement first reported by Te Ao Māori News, saying they were coming to terms with a significant loss to their whānau, Te Hāhi Rātana, his iwi of Ngāti Apa and Whanganui, and his former colleagues in parliament.
His whānau described Rurawhe as a pillar of their family and acknowledged his deep connection to the Rātana faith and its legacy.
