That request was declined because the bank no longer offered cash services. A staff member informed him: “We no longer do that now.”

A bank denying an 84-year-old man’s request to withdraw cash over the counter has brought on a rebuke from NZ First leader Winston Peters.

Allistair Meikle had been a loyal customer of his bank since the tender age of 15. Late last month, he walked into the SBS Bank on Main St in Gore and asked if he could withdraw some cash from his account.

That request was declined because the bank no longer offered cash services. A staff member informed him: “We no longer do that now.”

Meikle was referred to a nearby ATM.
