The BFD face of the Day Poppy Lekner is the winner of the 2020 Parkin Drawing Prize with her piece Forward Slash, an A4 piece of paper with type-written forward slashes over and over on it.

Today’s face of the day is wearing a strange expression and, with a little imagination, I can do a Nicky Hager and make some Fatima level assumptions about what her strained facial expression actually means.

My story goes something like this…

One day Poppy was drinking with some friends who were artists and she got a little tipsy and started mocking the type of art that requires no skill but that with the right spin can be sold to suckers for thousands of dollars. Her artist friends (who were pretty tipsy themselves at this point) disagreed and explained that they had all entered the Parkin Drawing competition that had a $25,000 art prize attached to it. They were all skilled artists and showed her their lifelike sketches and all mused about how great it would be to win the cash prize.

Poppy laughed and boasted that she could win the prize herself despite not having an artistic bone in her body. Her mates, of course, challenged her to create an art work and to post it that night as the deadline was in 5 days time.

With that, Poppy drunkenly swayed over to her old typewriter that she had on display on a lounge shelf and to great laughter from her friends, repeatedly with one finger typed forward slashes again and again, filling line after line while drinking red wine that sloshed about in a wine glass in her other hand. Then with a flourish, she pulled it off the typewriter, hand wrote a cover note and while her sniggering friends watched her she popped it into an envelope, licked a stamp and then they all walked down the street laughing drunkenly to watch her put it in the postbox.

A great cheer went up as she posted it and then they all went home to sleep, only to wake with a terrible hangover.

A few months later there was a knock on Poppy’s door and a journalist and photographer there to share the good news that she had won the Art prize. Her strange expression therefore was the result of her biting her tongue because as much as she badly wanted to share the joke with the rest of the world there was no way that she was going to turn down $25,000!
