Kurt Stewart is hailing former “gang dog” Missy a hero for raising the alarm when a large blaze erupted in a building just metres from where he lives.

The military man turned builder moved from Whanganui to a flat on Heathcote St in Christchurch in February for a change of lifestyle.

He was working on his computer and listening to music on his headphones about 1am on Sunday when 6-year-old Missy began growling and loudly barking.

“She was almost angry and you don’t get that in her. That’s when I knew something was wrong.”
