“Free subject to conditions” would be the security status of terror suspect Suhayra Aden if she returns to New Zealand, according to a senior government minister.
It looks increasingly likely the New Zealand woman accused of being an Islamic State terrorist will end up back here with her two children, as negotiations about their fate continue.
Suhayra Aden, 25, and her children are being held in a deportation centre in Turkey after trying to illegally cross the border from Syria.
A Turkish Foreign Affairs source has characterised the message from New Zealand officials as: “We will come and take her. Give us some time because of the Covid-19 threat,” according to RNZ correspondent Vehbi Bas.

The game of hot potato has been lost by New Zealand’s PM Jacinda Ardern. Australia’s PM Scott Morrison was the first to take away the alleged ISIS terrorist’s Australian citizenship.
Of course, Ardern could take away the woman’s NZ citizenship as well leaving her stateless and stuck in Turkey but Ardern has decided that you cannot do that to a person.
I say why not? By the sounds of it, this woman took part in murder and torture and other atrocities. Should we really be squeamish about denying her and her children access to New Zealand?
We are not talking about an innocent refugee or an ordinary NZ citizen. We are talking about someone who chose to join ISIS.
I say think about the children (not hers): the children of New Zealanders who will be put at risk by having this alleged terrorist and her psychologically damaged children in their town.
As usual Ardern’s kindness is actually cruel. She will put the needs of this alleged killer over the safety of other New Zealanders.
Ask any mother if they would want their child to share a classroom or a school camp with the alleged terrorist and her children. Even the ones who want her let into New Zealand will draw the line once it is their precious child who is put in danger.
They will all be for Ardern’s cruel kindness just as long as the danger is not in their backyard. I say that Ardern should set an example by rehoming this alleged terrorist in her street. After all, if she poses no threat to New Zealanders she might as well offer her services as a nanny to Ardern. Little Neve could play with her children. What fun.
