This money to Ethiopia announced by Nanaia Mahuta on Twitter this week is very odd. At the time of writing, there is no official statement that would normally accompany such aid on either the Beehive or Mfat websites. Instead, there is just a quick line on Twitter.

3.25 million is a very large sum of money that many would argue is needed to help New Zealanders. Why such a down low, very quiet announcement? Why on earth are we helping Ethiopia? It is a very strange decision and quite inappropriate given the need for funds for New Zealanders in these difficult times.
