He wants to kill our dairy cows but he doesn’t want us to eat meat. Today’s face of the day Green co-leader James Shaw won’t rest until we are all eating mung beans and chowing down on insects while living in caves.

The Climate Change Minister is finally admitting that to cut emissions we need to cull the herd – we need to have fewer cows.

“At the moment yes, there are no technologies that reduce emissions at the moment which don’t involve deintensifying,” Shaw said.

Don’t you love the euphemism for killing cows? We are not killing off our valuable milk-producing cows we are “deintensifying” farmers’ herds.

And we need to change what’s on our dinner plates. The heavy-hitting Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) says we all need to eat less meat.

Do you know who eats less meat? Poor people. Rich people enjoy delicious steak dinners. It is poor people in poor backward countries that have to eat insects and grubs and whatever vegetables they are able to grow inefficiently and organically.

“I would call myself a reducetarian,” added Shaw.

New Zealand delegates at the IPCC panel also appear to be reducetarians, arguing to reduce all references in its summary to “plant-based diets” and instead use the term “healthy diets”.

Do you know what is healthy? Meat is healthy. It is loaded with nutrients and iron and it is made of vegetarians. What could be more “plant-based” than that?
