The Runanga Miners’ Hall on the South Island’s West Coast may be recognised as a Unesco World Heritage site. Mining union leader Bob Semple, who became the minister of works in the first Labour government, opened the building, in 1937. Campaigner Paul Thomas says restoring the building and preserving the hall’s history has become an obsession.
