Broadcasting Minister Willie Jackson says TVNZ and RNZ are not prioritising Maori, Pasifika, Asians and young people enough and the planned merger will change that.
“They’re there, but there is not enough priority and I would like to see those groups prioritised, obviously along with Pakeha New Zealand too.”
TVNZ and RNZ are Crown Entities that are supposedly independent of interference from government ministers.
But the Crown Entities Act says the new entity, Aotearoa New Zealand Public Media, must have regard to government policy when directed by their minister.
National broadcasting spokesperson Melissa Lee says she is concerned: “I’m worried that it will create not only the perception, but also the reality that the new entity will become a mouthpiece for the government.”
Two thirds of respondents to a Stuff poll said they were against the merger. But Willie thinks they’ll get over it.
