The Labour Government’s Cost of Living payment begins rolling out today.

To receive this payment you are required to be residing in New Zealand. But, it seems a number of ex-pats have been notified they’ll receive the handout. And IRD says it won’t be pursuing payments made by mistake.

The payment of $350 over three months ($116.66 per month) for those eligible will do little to offset price increases; however, the scheme is costing $816 million, of which IRD receives $16 million for 700 staff to implement the payments.

This token payment makes little sense, but, then, perhaps Labour isn’t measuring the cost-benefit analysis in terms of ‘financial’ assistance terms.
