People have finally realised that our education system is turning into a real mess. There is NO WAY that can be blamed on Covid. It is, of course, the children who can least afford to miss out who are doing the worst.
Over the last two years, I have organised the data to show each school’s results for all students that left that school during the previous year. This year I have completed it for 2021 for all NZ high schools. It is incredibly comprehensive and telling. There are some amazing schools that are punching well above their weight but there are also many that people would think are doing well that are actually atrocious.
The public (parents and taxpayers) have every right to ask why millions are poured every year into schools that are plainly failing their students.
The high school I went to was appalling 40 years ago and has since managed to get worse.
Two weeks ago I processed this achievement data against the newly released Equity Index numbers for schools, which were supposed to correlate to achievement through 37 demographics (risk factors). The aim was to replace the decile system.
It is a huge stuff up – the correlations are much weaker than they should be, and schools do not have to set goals or explain what they are spending the extra money on. The schools are now also more exposed as everyone is learning the EQ Index numbers now as individual schools (not as a part of a decile).
It is a huge data set and if you want the full version for professional or personal use please email me (alwyn.poole@gmail.com).
Taxpayers need to know where their money is going. The political will for substantial change will only come from knowing how bad things are – and this is just the tip of the iceberg.
(All results are for % of school leavers from each school for 2021 – through Education Counts. I have made an approximation of an EQI for private schools as they were not included in the Ministry’s work).
