As media outlets have steadily bled viewers and money over the last decade, one success story stood out from the pack: Fox News.
If anything, the Trump presidency threw an unexpected lifeline to the mainstream US media. The left tuned into CNN and MSNBC for their Daily Two Minutes of Hate at the Bad Orange Man while conservatives flocked to Fox.
Until the night of the 3rd of November, 2020.
Watching Fox’s election night coverage was gobsmacking. Fox practically fell over itself to declare states for Joe Biden often hours ahead of even CNN. Kathryn Murdoch, wife of recently-former News Corp director James Murdoch, tweeted triumphantly, “We did it!” Popular host Judge Jeanine Pirro was suspended for airing allegations of electoral fraud. Fox ostentatiously cut off White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany as she detailed examples of alleged fraud.
Well, Fox did it, all right: got woke, went broke, that is.
Viewers have deserted Fox in droves since election night. Fox was already under fire for Chris Wallace’s performance as the first presidential debate host. The election coverage was the final straw for millions of viewers.
For the past four years, Fox had continually rated higher than all the other mainstream outlets. Now, its ratings are in a death-dive, dropping by over 30% in a few weeks. The once-mighty Fox now fights in the mud with CNN.
But there is a big winner from Fox’s misery.
Conservative election night viewers, including those in the White House, tuned in to Newsmax TV in protest against other networks’ coverage, according to a report by Newsweek.

Newsmax was the first major news network to project Florida for Trump.
As the #Foxexit hashtag trended, the dreaded “ratioing” began. Even Bret Baier wasn’t immune from Fox’s ignominy. A seemingly bland tweet from Baier’s account was piled on to by angry (ex-)Fox viewers. The tweet was deleted.
On the other hand, NewsMax’s ratings have skyrocketed. The channel broke the million-viewer mark for the first time in its history, up from mere tens of thousands. Its audience has increased nearly 20-fold.
Other angry Fox viewers tweeted that they were switching to Newsmax TV.

“No matter what the final results are tonight, one thing is extremely clear. @FoxNews can no longer claim to be the fair and balanced network they once were. There are a lot of biased hacks there now and a ton of folks are noticing. It’s now @newsmax for me for election results.”
