Google admits Biden pressure to censor YouTube, promises free speech reset

“A political atmosphere that sought to influence the actions of platforms.”

Google has acknowledged that the Biden administration pressured YouTube to censor content during the pandemic and election debates, even when it did not breach company rules.

In a letter to House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan, the company pledged to restore accounts banned under now-defunct policies and said it wanted to “embrace free expression.”

The letter, sent by Google’s lawyers, said YouTube will allow all creators previously removed for repeated violations of its COVID and election integrity policies to rejoin. Those rules, which had been used to take down prominent conservative voices, are no longer in effect.

The change could benefit figures such as Sebastian Gorka, Steve Bannon, and Dan Bongino. YouTube admitted that such creators “have extensive reach and play an important role in civic discourse.”

Google also conceded that White House officials conducted “repeated and sustained outreach” urging the removal of certain pandemic-related content, creating “a political atmosphere that sought to influence the actions of platforms.”

Jordan called it a breakthrough for free speech, writing on X: “Due to our oversight efforts, GOOGLE commits to offer ALL creators previously kicked off YouTube due to political speech violations to return to the platform. BUT THAT’S NOT ALL.”

The letter also cited broader concerns, pointing to European laws such as the Digital Services Act and Digital Markets Act, which Google warned could stifle innovation and restrict access to information. However, some critics are pointing out that the channels of both Alex Jones and Nick Fuentes were shut down within hours of their creation.
