If You Want to Get Down…

Newshub breathlessly reports on the massive spike in cocaine use in New Zealand.

Wastewater samples have revealed a massive rise in New Zealand’s cocaine use while methamphetamine and MDMA consumption appears to be on the decline.

Police’s national wastewater testing programme results for between July and September (Q3) last year, published this week, showed 980 g of cocaine per week on average was detected across 10 sample sites – up 70% from the previous four quarters’ average.

Wastewater sampling isn’t really that useful. Sure, it shows an increase in the drug but doesn’t show the number of users. Maybe those that are already coke-heads are now able to get more cheaper and as a result are using more.

“Tamaki Makaurau continued to consume the most cocaine per capita in Q3 2022”, a summary of the results said.

Thank God it’s not happening in Auckland, then.

The 0.98 kilograms of cocaine consumed equates to an estimated cost of $0.29 million in social harm per week in Q3 2022.

It’s questionable whether it’s that much, but anyway.

Methamphetamine levels in New Zealand, meanwhile, were found to be lower than average in Q3.

[…] MDMA was detected to be the highest per capita in the Southern District but national consumption per week was down by 28 per cent on average.

Heh, they love Molly down in the south.

[…] The testing results come after New Zealand authorities recently seized more than $500 million worth of cocaine in what police said was one of the biggest-ever drug hauls in the country.

I can just imagine the reaction of the police.

[…] “While this disrupts the syndicate’s operations, we remain vigilant given the lengths we know these groups will go to circumvent coming to law enforcement’s attention.”

Understatement of the century. While the seizure is big, in the long run it will have no effect. All that will happen is that the cartels will learn from it and not make similar mistakes in future.

That there was going to be an increase in cocaine in New Zealand is something I’ve been predicting for while. For a start, the drug cartels have been looking for new markets. Also, as far as I’m aware, cartels have been setting up shop in the Pacific Islands.

But anyway, coke is a shit drug made by shit people for shit people which causes them to become even shittier people. But if they want to snort a crap drug up their noses so be it. Just don’t use my tax money in a useless attempt to try and stop them.
