An interesting post appeared on the interwebs a few days ago.  In it Zoe Phin reported on some analyses she had done on publicly available NASA data; the Vegetation Index, a measure of how green the earth is.

Using the wizardry of extracting, manipulating and graphing the source data from 2000 to 2021 she found an interesting result: the earth has become 10% greener.

The data is collected by satellite every 16 days and shows the seasonal variations in leaf cover etc.  Because the earth is only ~29% land there is an upper limit to this index measure of 0.29, and this would mean all of the land is covered in heavy vegetation.

Vegetation Index – NASA data graphed by Zoe Phin. The BFD

The start index figure is 0.0936, the end figure is 0.1029, an increase of 9.94%.

Planet Earth is 10% greener than it was 20 years ago.

The Greens must be ecstatic about this wonderful result from the steadily increasing levels of atmospheric CO2.

Oh …wait!  Those who want a greener planet hate CO2.
