My son said to me recently, “Why is every scandal called something-gate?” It’s a startling reminder for those of us of a certain age that Watergate is already passing into the mists of history. Yet, it was a scandal that, for the first and only time in US history, brought down a sitting president.

The thread that unravelled the Nixon presidency — recall that less than two years earlier, he had won one of the biggest landslide victories in presidential history — was a bungled burglary committed to try and steal inside information on Nixon’s political opponents.

Nearly half a century later, another administration is allegedly burglarizing an opponent’s office to try and steal information. Nixon at least had the shred of decency to use only his personal henchmen: the Biden administration is weaponising the state secret police.

Texas Rep. Troy Nehls, a Republican, accused the U.S. Capitol Police (USCP) of placing him under “investigation” and taking a secret photo of constitutionally-protected legislative documents in his office.

Bear in mind that the USCP has been dramatically expanded under Biden and turned into a de facto nationwide secret police.

The goons are claiming that they merely investigated an office door left open. Which begs the question of why photos were taken of documents in the office and passed on to Deep State spooks.

As Nehls notes:

Rather than clearing the office, the officer took photos of confidential material in Congressman Nehls’ legislative office that detailed the introduction of a pro-law enforcement bill that would have ensured body armor quality for law enforcement officers. The photo was passed up to USCP intelligence analysts and a report was filed citing “suspicious writings.” That following Monday, three plain-clothed USCP agents returned to the office, where they questioned a staff member about the contents of the questionably-obtained photo.

Just as Watergate went far beyond a botched burglary, the Nehls scandal is much more than a simple matter of secret agents checking an open door.

“This goes much deeper than an unethical entry into my office by Capitol police,” said Congressman Nehls. “This is a violation of Members’ right to speech and debate, as well as a 4th amendment violation. Could you imagine leaving your front door open and police officers enter your private home, take pictures of the inside, and then open an investigation based on those pictures?”

Especially if you’d been openly critical of police. Why you might even be inclined to suspect that you were being spied upon.

The incident comes after Congressman Nehls was selected by Leader McCarthy to be a member of the January 6th select committee, and has been actively critical towards the Capitol Police leadership’s intelligence failures in the leadup to January 6th and the shooting of Ms. Ashli Babbitt.

This is, of course, far from the only time the Democrats have, in the word of Indiana Republican Jim Banks, “weaponised” the Deep State. The IRS under Barack Obama notoriously targeted the Democrat president’s critics for punishing investigations. During the 2016 election campaign, when Hillary Clinton was under investigation for using an allegedly illegal private email server, the Democrat candidate’s husband, ex-President Clinton, secretly met Attorney General Loretta Lynch in a parked jet for 20 minutes. Under Obama as well, the FBI ran a secret surveillance operation on the Trump campaign.

This is all on top of the massive, top-secret domestic spying program, PRISM, run by the Obama administration.

Nehls’ press release came as USCP faces scrutiny over their recently-reported surveillance practice on lawmakers, their staffs and people they meet with.

Several Republicans signed a letter to Pelosi and Committee on House Administration Chairwoman Zoe Lofgren, D-Calif., calling on them to investigate the reports of Capitol Police “monitoring” lawmakers and citizens.

Rep. Andy Biggs, R-Ariz., led a Tuesday letter exclusively obtained by Fox News Digital with 33 of his GOP colleagues to Pelosi and Lofgren regarding reports that Capitol Police have dug into the backgrounds of people who meet with lawmakers.

Then there is the recent announcement by the Department of Homeland Security that it regards “undermin[ing] public trust in U.S. government institutions” by, among other things, questioning covid policies, as its primary “terrorism threat”.

More and more, the USA under Joe Biden is turning into an Orwellian surveillance state.
