Letter from the North

The UK is a failing state.

First: a disclaimer.

Nothing I say in the following piece is to be interpreted, or imply, that I in any way support acts of violence, race hatred, discrimination or exhortation to use anything other than a peaceful expression of one’s views.

The latest immigration figures show the UK had a year-on-year population increase of 755,000 in June 2024; this is the second highest in history. The vast majority of this is legal immigration with detected illegal migration modest in comparison, but still horrifically high and unfair to people who follow due process. In 2024, the UK saw a 19 per cent increase in overall irregular arrivals to 44,000, with small boat arrivals rising 25 per cent to 36,816.

It was disclosed recently that one asylum seeker was accompanied by nine family members and granted a visa. Questions are now being asked about what benefit this will bring to the country and its economy.

Analysis of data from the Annual Population Survey indicates that family unification migrants are less likely to be employed and more likely to be economically inactive (not seeking work) compared to both the total foreign-born population and the UK-born. This pattern holds true for both men and women.

The disparity is more pronounced among recent arrivals: only 56 per cent of family unification migrants who had been in the UK for nine years or less were employed, compared to 71 per cent of the total foreign-born population. Among those who had been in the UK for longer, the gap narrows: 69 per cent of family unification migrants were employed, compared to 77 per cent of the foreign-born and 75 per cent of the UK-born. Differences by length of residence are particularly notable among men.

Following on from that, there was a row started by Donald Trump who said that Sadiq Khan, the left-wing major of London was promoting Sharia courts in London. That cannot be verified but there are at least 85 Sharia courts reported as being active in the UK.

Forced and early marriage, – polygamy and draconian attitudes towards the role of women in the home result in such wives having little or no power – and men doing exactly as they wish.

Widespread use of
Sharia courts to settle disputes between family members has resulted in a free-for-all within some conservative Muslim households.

There are estimated to be as many as 85 Sharia courts operating in Britain.

These courts enjoy at least some conditional support from a number of non-Muslim establishment figures, apparently including the former-Archbishop of Canterbury Dr Rowan Williams.

The UK is rapidly going downhill and losing its social cohesion.

The Labour Conference has finished and Keir Starmer and his ministers had an immediate impact on the nation. In the post-conference bounce, the public reacted to Starmer and co savaging Farage and the Reform party, using the Nazi card to call their policies racist (always a mistake: the Nazi reference is much hackneyed and loses impact through overuse).

As a result of this, the first poll after the Labour conference showed Reform on 34 per cent, Labour 21 per cent, Conservative 16 per cent, Lib Dem 12 per cent, Green 10 per cent and sundry others the balance. This is yet another increase in the lead for Reform and a further poll broke this down by constituency and found that it would give Reform 377 seats in a parliament of 650.

The major parties are in a complete panic. The more they rubbish Farage, the more they call him and Reform racist, the stronger Reform’s support becomes! Like Ms Clinton’s “deplorables” in the USA, they all have votes and you don’t insult ordinary British citizens who support Reform without consequences. They talk amongst themselves at work, in the pub and on social occasions and the word spreads.

That brings me to the subject of the attack at the Manchester Synagogue on Yom Kippur. Most British people are still fair minded and treat people with respect. There has been antisemitism over the years but always very small and restricted to a few people (reference the battle of Cable Street, oddly enough on 4 October, 1936, and the general support for the Jewish residents in the battle). There have long been about 300,000 Jews in the UK, never rising or declining by many. This is about 0.4 per cent of the UK population). The Jewish population increased from 46,000 in 1880 to about 250,000 in 1919 and is now just short of 300,000.

In contrast there are about 4,000,000 Muslims in the UK, and actors within that community have exploited the British support for the underdog and managed to create division. They are big enough and concentrated in certain electorates to have built a power base and this is reflected in some of the current MPs. There were 19 Muslim MPs in 2019 and in the 2024 election there were 24 Muslim MPs elected: 18 Labour, two Conservative and four independent.

The 2021 census found that the Muslim population of the UK was 3,998,875 (6.0% of the total population).

England 3,801,186 (6.7%)

Scotland 119,872 (2.2%)

Wales 66,947 (2.2%)

Northern Ireland 10,870 (0.6%).

In 1961 the Muslim population of the UK was 50,000

1971    226,000

1981    553,000

1991    950,000

2001 1,600,000

2011 2,706,066

2021 3,868,133

Global change

The number of Jews around the world grew by six per cent, from an estimated 14 million in 2010 to nearly 15 million in 2020. That’s fewer than the
estimated 16.6 million Jews who were alive in 1939, prior to the Holocaust.

This increase in the immigrant Muslim population has resulted in many of their cultural and other disputes coming to the UK with them and it is having an influence in the UK, being expressed in the number of demonstrations against Israel, and this in turn has been shown in increased antisemitism.

Yesterday there was a demonstration in London by supporters of the Palestine Action Group (PAG), a proscribed organisation, with people holding placards saying ‘I support the PAG’. This resulted in 488 people being arrested. The organisers refused to delay the protest for a week out of respect to the mourners; apparently their right to demonstrate trumps common decency.

This is part of their strategy of recruiting high-minded well-meaning citizens, many of whom are elderly and so being arrested doesn’t affect their employment or prospects. It is the group’s intention to continue this plague of demonstrations and totally clog up the courts and stop them from functioning efficiently.

This is causing concern to the average person and they are sick and tired of it.

There are rumblings amongst the electorate, especially in the North, and even discussion of civil war. I don’t take this seriously but as an expression of frustration and an inability to get politicians (especially Labour) to actually address concerns. This has caused an outbreak of national hopelessness and is a breeding ground for future societal breakdown. This combined with the actions of ethnic entrepreneurs is causing major societal issues in the UK. Ethnic entrepreneurs in this arena of academic research refers to the actions of actors who seek to leverage political gain/change, not the business definition.

I am sorry to get carried away a bit but I have studied the development of conflicts at post-graduate level and the future for the UK is looking bleak unless someone in politics gets a grip.

I remember family discussions many years ago at gatherings (mostly Hogmanay), learning from my uncle who was one of the first Allied troops to enter Belsen and my father who was a paratrooper. His company consisted of six officers and 180 other ranks and was later joined by 25 German and Austrian Jews. These Jews were renamed and given identity papers etc showing their new names, mostly Scottish for some reason. This was an elite unit in the regiment and in 1946 it was despatched to Palestine as part of the policing of the mandate. This has of course given me a perspective on matters and an understanding of the conflict today.

Well, I am afraid that writing this letter has depressed me, so I will cheer myself up by listening to some Leonard Cohen songs.
