Letter to the Editor: Dawn Raids, White Privilege Gets More Space

Dear Editor

Did readers note TVNZ’s blatant effort the other evening to attach more ‘white privilege’ onto the government’s official apology for the 1970s Pasifika dawn raids?

TVNZ’s longtime puppet to the socialists, announcer Simon Dallow, said: “And most of the overstayers at the time were from Europe or North America. …” (See ‘TVNZ 6pm News On Demand’ (June 14) – approx 1 minute into the bulletin).

I can’t find anything online to back up his claims. Sure, there had been a few young men from the United States hiding here (and elsewhere), keen to avoid serving in the Vietnam War. But to compare that with the thousands of illegal overstayers from the Pacific Islands who had flooded New Zealand from the mid-1970s to the early 1980s is ludicrous.

And another fact they didn’t tell you – the raids were first introduced in 1973 by Norman Kirk’s Labour government, to be continued by Robert Muldoon’s National government.

Signed

Archie Adams
