Dear Editor

With the election in full swing, the water storage issue is no longer being talked about. Looking at this very good site I can see that the current level is sitting at 67% which is well below this time last year which was at 84%.

It was recently agreed that Auckland could take more water from the Waikato river, but the thing is I haven’t seen the Waikato river so low at this time of year. Usually, in late winter/early spring the level of the river in Hamilton has meant that parts of the walkway are closed due to the river being so high and at times it floods the lower level of the rowing club. At the moment the level would be a good couple of metres below this level and using the eyeometer seems very low. Will this affect Auckland’s ability to access the water if the level of the river is too low and what does this mean for the numerous dams along the river which provide power to the upper north? Maybe some readers have more insight other than my basic observations.

Regards

Nigel
