Dear Editor
The National party is about to commence a review into its disastrous election result. Unless I am very much mistaken, it will involve all sorts of finger-pointing and excuses but — as is usual in such cases — not involve blaming themselves.
The reason they did so badly is that almost all of the caucus absolutely despises those who are the party’s strongest supporters. They view them as racists, rednecks, hicks, simpletons — people who need to be “corrected” and shown the error of their ways.
The David Farrar, Chris Bishop, Nicola Willis faction who run the party (let’s be honest here) has nothing but contempt for National voters living outside of Wellington and it shows.
I have personally heard National MPs from rural electorates — after a couple of drinks — join in the laughs at the stupidity of the hicks and rubes living in their electorates. It’s fairly shocking they would seek votes from people they truly despise; the hide on some of these people is breathtaking!
What these people need to do is end their denial and join the Labour party — just as Malcolm Turnbull in Australia should have stopped the absurdity of pretending to be a Liberal, so these MPs and National party officials who fully support Jacinda and co should quit and take seats on the Government side of the House.
The worst aspect of this contempt is they won’t make speeches or champion causes dear to the hearts of their constituents lest it upset the Labour people! (how sick is that?)
So when David Seymour stood up and talked about gun rights, freedom of speech, property rights, welfare reforms, tax cuts — he got 4500 votes in each rural electorate leaving the local National MP in a state of genuine incomprehension as to why they did so badly.
