MMP and Hurty Feelings

Best of MountainsideFM.

I have no sympathy for Luxon and his call for a change to our election system. He is frustrated with his coalition partners. Could this be the ideal time for a change to the system rather than pandering to a prime minister’s hurt feelings?

Very few now argue that New Zealand should return to the days when a party could win an outright majority of seats with only 35–40 per cent of the vote. Proportional representation has become an accepted part of our political landscape. My criticism is directed less at proportionality itself than at the closed party list component. That is a criticism that more and more voters share across the political spectrum.
