A NIMBY  (Not In My Back Yard) is someone who pays a lower price or rent for a property in an area because it is next to a chicken farm or an airport, has a train running across the back of it or is under power lines. They then complain about the fact that the chickens smell, the planes and trains are noisy and the power lines hum.

A NIMBY is also a person who objects to something perceived as unpleasant or hazardous being placed in their own neighbourhood but doesn’t object to similar developments elsewhere.

Many politicians are NIMBYs: they are all in favour of refugees (for example) being placed into suburbs in their cities as long as they are not in the suburbs in which they live, because that might bring down their property values.

A NIMBY might agree that a community or a neighbourhood needs a half-way house for convicts transitioning back to society, but doesn’t want it placed too close to his or her own home or in the neighbourhood.[…]
