Canada’s Mounties have long enjoyed a reputation as Dudley Do-Right upstanding, reliable heroes. Beside the cartoon hero, 90s crime series Due South, premised on a Mountie sent to show the roughneck American coppers a lesson in Canadian politeness and square-jawed honesty.
That image is unlikely to survive against the brutal reality seen in Canada this week.
Like something out of a Cold War communist dictatorship, ranks of militaristic Canadian police with riot shields and batons ruthlessly moved in on protesters in Ottawa. Accompanying them were squads of Mounties who proceeded to trample old ladies — and then not just lie about it, but privately boast about it.
How proud they are, indeed.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said it is looking into allegedly leaked screenshots showing Canadian authorities reportedly boasting about brute force on protesters demonstrating against Canada’s coronavirus mandates.
“Time for the protesters to hear our jackboots on the ground,” one member of RCMP Musical Ride allegedly wrote.
“Musical Ride” is supposed to be an RMCP group aimed at promoting the Mounties’ image and “build positive relationships”.
I don’t think bragging about beating up peaceful protesters and trampling old ladies is going to work.
“Don’t kick all of them out until next weeks group gets our turn,” one member of RCMP Musical Ride allegedly said in the group chat accompanied by a photo of a beer, Rebel News reported.
Another member also allegedly boasted about the “awesome” video allegedly showing people getting trampled by a police officer on a horse in Ottawa, according to the outlet.
“just watched the horse video – that is awesome,” the RCMP Musical Ride member allegedly wrote.
“we should practice that manoeuvre.”
Nice.
No wonder Canadian police are covering their badge numbers and names.
A civilian oversight agency in Ontario announced on Sunday that it is investigating reports of a 49-year-old woman left seriously injured after a Toronto police officer on a horse allegedly trampled her in Ottawa.

Candice was present and was trampled by the police horse along with her mobility scooter.
She went to the hospital shortly after and had her injuries taken care of. Bruising on the back of her leg, a broken collar bone and sore ribs are just some of them. Despite all this, she’s in high spirits, saying:
I’m still alive, I’m still here. Thank you to everyone out there. I’m okay.
