Now They’re Coming for the Pythons

The Australian The BFD.

We all knew it had to happen, eventually: the Cancel Culture lynch-mob has come for the Pythons.

Should we be surprised? The fact that they refused to disown the “Stan/Loretta” scene from Life of Brian was a big, rainbow target on their backs. All the Twitter inquisitors needed was an excuse, however threadbare.

First Python head on the block is Terry Gilliam.

Gilliam, 80, had been due to co-direct the Stephen Sondheim musical Into the Woods at the Old Vic in London next year. The American composer had expressed support for Gilliam’s artistic vision for the production.

The theatre, however, has unexpectedly announced the cancellation of the show. Gilliam, who could not be contacted, is said to have upset members of staff at the Old Vic because of his views on various topics, including Harvey Weinstein and trans rights.

Which is not exactly an accurate description of what he actually said. But, this is the mainstream media and the Woke-isition.

So, what did Gilliam really say?

His unpardonable sin was to say that Dave Chappelle is funny and that he hates Harvey Weinstein — “I had to work with him and I know the abuse” — but “MeToo” has become a witch-hunt that is destroying “decent people”.

All of this is true. But then, we live in a time of universal deceit.

Worse than even all that, though, Gilliam has the shocking temerity to scoff at the idea of “white privilege”.

“When I announce that I’m a black lesbian in transition people take offence at that. Why?”

Cue autistic screeching from the people who believe that Laurel Hubbard is a woman and that one can be a yellow dragon or “an expansive ornate building” trapped in a human body. No, really: I’m not making that up.

Gilliam’s former Monty Python partners have been critical of “cancel culture”. It was announced this year that John Cleese was to explore the phenomenon in a new series on Britain’s Channel 4. He has criticised the “stifling” effect of political correctness on comedy. According to the channel, Cleese’s series will “explore why a new ‘woke’ generation is trying to rewrite the rules on what can and can’t be said”.

Huh! What a bunch of privileged old fogeys. Everyone knows that cancel culture is a myth.

Now, shut up, in case they cancel you.
