NZ First moves to scrap diversity requirements in public service

“The public service exists to serve New Zealanders—not to be a breeding ground for identity politics.”

Winston Peters is making another move against what he calls “woke left-wing social engineering,” introducing the Public Service (Repeal of Diversity and Inclusiveness Requirements) Amendment Bill.

The bill removes diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) mandates from public service hiring, ensuring merit is the primary factor in government recruitment.

“The public service exists to serve New Zealanders—not to be a breeding ground for identity politics,” Peters said. He argues that hiring should be based on merit, not “forced woke” policies.

The bill would repeal key sections of the Public Service Act 2020, including obligations for workforce diversity, government briefings on inclusiveness, and diversity considerations in appointing chief executives.

While this is not a government bill, and will only proceed if drawn from the ballot, it signals NZ First’s intent to dismantle the DEI framework it once supported when it was in coalition with Labour in 2020.

National’s Chris Bishop was non-committal, saying his party prioritises “meritocracy” but will review the bill if it advances.
