Big surprise, Victoria is teetering on the edge of winter blackouts because one of its last remaining coal-fired power stations is offline. Now, if your power grid ‘is on heightened alert’ of wide-scale blackouts, because of a lack of coal-fired power, would you:
A) build more coal-fired power stations; or,
B) vow to shut down all remaining coal-fired power as quickly as possible.
If you answered ‘B’, then you’re likely either a Victorian politician or one of the idiots who voted for them.
EnergyAustralia, which owns the Yallourn power station in the Latrobe Valley, has confirmed one of the plant’s four units is down and will remain offline for at least two weeks following a maintenance mishap that saw an air duct collapse inside the facility […]
The incident has taken a quarter of the plant’s generation capacity offline during one of the most volatile periods for demand – the early weeks of winter – and could force Victoria to lean more heavily on gas-fired generation if temperatures plunge.
While the state has plenty of gas – for now – that supply is as endangered as its coal-fired power. The Victorian government has a hard ideological stance against gas, as well as coal. Its Labor government has for years outlawed new gas exploration, even as current fields begin to run out.
Still, coal still supplies the vast majority of Victoria’s electricity. Just three plants – Loy Yang A and B and Yallourn – supply the bulk of Victoria’s electricity.
So, naturally, the socialist Labor government is determined to shut them down.
Outages at AGL’s Bayswater plant and Origin’s Eraring facility last year — both in NSW – triggered similar volatility in wholesale markets. Those outages coincided with a heatwave, which pushed electricity demand higher and contributed to a jump in retail tariffs. From July 1, NSW households are expected to see power bills rise by up to nine per cent.
‘Hold our skinny almond-milk lattes,’ says Victoria.
Frankly, they almost deserve it.
I mean, how is it possible to read something like this without a little tickle of schadenfreude?
I’m a 75 yr old Aussie, earned 3 degrees, worked hard, paid taxes for 40 yrs. Just made toast n coffee, got back into bed to get warm cos I can’t afford to put the heating on in Melbn 6c. Is this NO-ONE LEFT BEHIND ALBO?
A Boomer woman with three university degrees? Oh, you just know she votes Green.
In case there’s any doubt, she immediately goes on to brand Labor voters “right wing nut jobs”. That’s right: Australia’s most far-left government since Whitlam is ‘right wing’ to this nosey-nanna greenie.
The hilarity is served with a spoon when you find this in her bio:
Socialist, pets, travel, sport, history. prison counsellor, anti racism, fascism, pro LGBTQIA, Nana, social justice, fully vaxxed and masked.
And, of course there’s the dinky little flag icons: ‘Palestine’, Lebanon and Iran.
Tell you what: let’s start a GoFundMe to buy her a one-way ticket to any one of those places. Not only will she be warm, she’ll get to experience the Islamic cultures she clearly admires, up front and personal. It’s a win-win for us all.
