David Deacon (74) isn’t sure how long he’s been cobbling shoes for, but thinks perhaps 22 years. He says he “knew nothing about shoes” when he started, but trained on the job. “I think I provide a good service.”

He says he tried retirement once, but it didn’t work. “I’m not planning on it any time soon.”
