Acts of the Apostles chapter 5 documents an early problem with ‘communalism’.
When transferring their possessions into common ownership, Ananias, with his wife Sapphira, sold their land but secretly held back a portion of the proceeds for themselves. As a result, they were struck dead in the presence of the apostles in a scene which parallels the demise of Lot’s wife in the book of Genesis. She had been turned into a pillar of salt when she looked back towards Sodom, the evil past.
Fabian socialists, of course, had a massive blind spot for Stalin, who achieved his dream of communalism in the Soviet state, not through a collective willing mindfulness, but through war, starvation and mass murder.
The diametrical opposite of the apostles’ vision of the Lord, the communist revolutions of the twentieth century were founded upon a denial of God, and were vested instead in the greatest evils imaginable to man.
Labour maintained close relations with this brutal regime. Harold Wilson (British Prime Minister 1964 to 1970 and 1974 to 1976) visited the USSR several times and boasted a knowledge of ‘restaurant Russian’. He died a paranoid and delusional man, believing that the KGB was trying to kill him. Which perhaps it was. Undue Russian influence in the UK continues to make headlines to this day.
Even Friedrich Nietzsche, the German philosopher who introduced nihilism and the death of the Abrahamic God to our universities, and who is the absolute danger-man of modern thought, believed that Marx was evil:
“The collective degeneration of man down to that which the socialist dolts and blockheads today see as their “man of the future” – as their ideal! – this degeneration and diminution of man to the perfect herd animal … this animilalisation of man to the pygmy animal of equal rights and equal pretensions is possible, there is no doubt about that! He who has once thought this possibility through to the end knows one more kind of disgust than other men do …”
Beyond Good and Evil
With hindsight, Nietzsche and Marx can probably take equal ‘credit’ for the destruction of Western civilisation, the latter through his revolutionary assertion of ‘equality’, and the former by driving out God from thought and from discourse, filling the vacuum with today’s rather pointless and ‘entitled’ contumaciousness.
With the God who had served as the basis for meaning and value in the West for more than a thousand years ‘gone’, Nietzsche, through his writings, reduced kindness to nothing more than a ‘curative agent’.
