Residents blindsided by fast-track plan to double Auckland Prison capacity

Corrections is seeking to expand Auckland Prison’s designation from 681 to 1220 beds under fast-track legislation.

The department says the prison population is rising, and it has a responsibility to manage it safely. The new designation would cover up to 960 low to high-security prisoners and 260 maximum security, with additional security facilities built inside the existing perimeter. Corrections says technical assessments for noise, light, traffic and infrastructure have been completed, and a maximum building coverage is planned to ensure not all land is built over.

“The Department of Corrections, back in 1988 and 1994, gave us reassurance there would be no further increase in numbers from the present restrictions of 680; we’ve got that in writing,” said Andy Riley of the Paremoremo Ratepayers and Residents Association. He added that while the current prison “is not a nuisance,” doubling capacity raises concerns: “It’s just the added capacity… now they’re talking about doubling it.”

Corrections says engagement is ongoing. “We are engaging with local residents and stakeholders on this proposal… to get their feedback and understand how we could potentially mitigate any concerns,” a spokesperson said.

Under the proposal, Corrections also seeks to remove the on-site staff housing and community facilities, known as Prison Village, from the designation and redevelop the facilities over time, with the existing maximum-security unit retained.
