From an unassuming Victorian terraced house in Leyton, East London, Britain’s Sharia Council presides over hundreds of cases every year. This parallel legal system remains unknown to many of its neighbours in Leyton, yet this court has existed for over 20 years. Presiding over the court are ten Sheikhs; respected members of the Muslim community with an intimate knowledge of Islamic Law. Their rulings are not recognised by British law but for many in the Muslim community their judgments carry the word of God.
