Poor old Simon Wilson. He finished up 2020 telling us why he was afraid and he’s started in 2021 by still being afraid. The things he’s afraid of haven’t changed much; he’s still banging on about climate change. Well, there’s good news on that front Simon and the good news shows just how far behind the climate times you are. Just like your mate Joe Biden who’s about to rejoin the silly Paris Accord it is all too late and a complete waste of time and money. I’ll tell you why later.
Now Simon is, like most of his mates on the left, supposedly also very concerned about democracy. Simon says January 6 was the wake-up call from Trump’s USA to Ardern’s Aotearoa to make democracy better. To give Simon some credit, I do think he subscribes to a truer meaning of democracy than most of his colleagues on the left. The recent behaviour of some of the left in powerful positions on social media platforms leaves a lot to be desired. They remind me of Alderman Cute in Charles Dickens’s story The Chimes. Alderman Cute, you may remember, was happy to have anything he didn’t like “put down”.
In the case of those who own social media, it’s the conservative voices they would like put down – including The BFD. Simon comments that during the storming of the Capitol by the hundreds of insurrectionists (every single one a rabid Trump supporter of course), there was one thing we learned.
We learned that while social media is a powerful grievance weapon and organising tool, it can also be remarkably impotent as an instrument of actual change.
This should not come as a surprise to Simon. I might also point out that social media should not be used in this way. That is not its role.
Simon has hit on one of the major problems with the left. They do not believe in democracy. It’s their way or the highway. With respect to social media, Simon is right: they are impotent. Hence their recent behaviour of starting to remove all opinions on their platforms that differ from theirs. The boss of Twitter has said Trump is just the start and it will be a long road to achieve their aims. We therefore conclude that the only ones allowed on will be Ardern and her like-minded band of comrades. That is not democracy.
Simon says the real fear is not about what happened but what will happen now. I agree with Simon, but no doubt he and I are expressing fear from opposing points of view. In Simon’s eyes Trump is both dangerous and laughable at the same time. He has evidently been enabled by the Republicans who have shored up the movement to Make America Ridiculous. That’s what we’ve been living in, says Simon, the age of American Ridiculousness. Like most on the left, they will never acknowledge any good that their enemies (and they do regard them as enemies) on the right have done.
Trump has brought industries back thereby creating jobs, which is why Biden just scraping in by a whisker in those rust belt states is so suspicious, and the evidence Ted Cruz wanted investigated is there staring everyone in the face. Simon needs to take off his rose-tinted glasses for five minutes. Cruz’s request was a perfectly reasonable one. But no, according to Simon, Cruz has all the blustering narcissism of Trump but none of the charm. It really is hard to comprehend a lot of the infantile drivel that comes out of the left. President Trump’s foreign policy, particularly in regard to the Middle East, is also something he deserves credit for.
Simon says the Republicans seem to believe they can’t win unless they frighten voters with misinformation and do their best to skew the outcome. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black!
Oh Simon, I nearly forgot. The good news. Just this week a geologist and earth scientist by the name of Ian Plimer was saying we need to prepare for the next ice age. He says we are getting near to the end of the current warm period which peaked about 5,000 years ago and now we should prepare for the next cool period. He states the obvious: that climate change is cyclical and basically controlled by the sun. If we think we can control it, we are deluding ourselves.
Stock up on the winter woolies Simon!
