Perhaps not so much a stuff up as another sign of the appalling editorial standard in place at Stuff these days.

An Auckland Airport spokesman said the incident on Thursday afternoon involved Air New Zealand flight NZ8109 from Auckland to Palmerston North.
Airways spokeswoman Emily Davies said the pilot phoned at 12.15pm saying they required assistance from emergency services.
Airways made the aircraft landing a priority and held arrivals for about five minutes, before it landed safely at 12.26pm.

A pilot requesting an emergency landing would be using the aircraft’s aeronautical radiocommunications equipment; he or she would not “phone” in.
