Te Pāti Māori can apologise all they want, as Waititi did at the pōwhiri, even offering his “head” if Ngāpuhi thought he had done wrong. But actions speak louder than words and this latest stunt shows they have learned nothing.
Despite Henare’s bold assertions, Hipkins has kept quiet so far about any plans he might have for reinstituting aspects of co-governance if Labour wins office – and the legacy media seem disinclined to ask.
Te Pāti Māori might fancy themselves as the voice of Māori aspiration but, right now, they’re looking more like a bunch of clowns who’ve forgotten their script.
The Māori seats gave us this circus. Maybe next election the voters will finally decide they’ve had enough of the soap opera and send the whole lot packing. One can but hope.

At some point, Labour is going to have to wake up and disown Te Pāti Māori. Hipkins can’t keep pretending this alliance is sustainable.
They are hopelessly compromised by internal wars, racist outbursts and leadership that’s as effective as a chocolate teapot. If this “restorative process” doesn’t end in more sackings or walkouts, I’ll eat my hat.
