Taxpayers’ Union demands answers over IRD blunder affecting thousands

"Not a one-off glitch."

Summarised by Centrist

The Taxpayers’ Union is calling for an urgent meeting with Inland Revenue after a system error left thousands of New Zealanders with incorrect tax bills.

According to the Union, the fault led to roughly 4500 taxpayers being wrongly told they owed money or being issued inaccurate refunds.

Investigations Coordinator Rhys Hurley described the situation as a serious failure by the organisation responsible for collecting billions in revenue each year.

He said this was “not a one-off glitch” but a problem that went unnoticed long enough to affect thousands, and IRD still cannot confirm how many past returns now require correction.

Hurley said taxpayers deserve clear answers and stronger accountability systems from IRD, and argued the agency had failed in its duty of care.

TPU wants formal assurances that no taxpayer will face penalties or interest due to an IRD mistake.
