As part of our drive to keep our comment section the best in New Zealand we showcase each week an example of a top-notch comment that adds value to The BFD.

Last week I received my invitation to be vaccinated. Even if it turns me into a lizard, I figure that at my age, the novelty might be quite refreshing so I made an appointment at 10:30 am Elliott Street, Auckland city.

I was able to walk (stagger) to the venue, turning up at 10:15 am to find huge queues and nowhere to sit. Lots of people were needing assistance with their incomplete documentation. My appointment time came and went with little apparent movement in the queue.

Somebody had to stand up when another elderly lady came in with a walking stick. Staff seemed surly, clearly under pressure and understaffed for such a throng. I was able to wait, but others had to leave because they’d only allowed 2 hours for parking.

As I left, streams of additional people were arriving to add to the fun. I felt sorry for the staff who were being asked repeatedly about the delays and where to find additional seats for frail or elderly patients.

With this performance, any suggestion that more people can start being vaccinated is completely unrealistic unless they’re calling on the GPs or opening additional facilities. At a minimum, if you’re overbooking elderly patients you really need to provide enough seating, as you can’t expect people to stand in an overcrowded room for over an hour.

Next, you can expect falls or other events requiring medical assistance until even the Team of $55M will struggle to convince the population to celebrate vaccination progress.
