As part of our drive to keep our comment section the best in New Zealand we showcase each week an example of a top-notch comment that adds value to The BFD.
Today’s comment was written by David Theobald Thank you David Theobald for taking the time to craft such an interesting comment.
It is the dawn of the first weekend of easing of immorally removed restrictions on our lives – I am unsure what was removed at 1159 last night and I don’t really care. Can I go to a restaurant tonight or is it the usual Saturday evening takeaway from the same establishment? Again I don’t care.
I know I can’t play golf tomorrow morning and will probably have a couple more Sunday mornings doing something else; I am yet to receive the ‘Welcome back’ email from the GC. As an aside, out of a club membership of over 2000, only five of us put our memberships ‘on hold’ for the last few months – I find that depressing.
I think thousands are now allowed to go and watch the final stages of the Women’s Cricket World Cup, but they won’t because it’s a dreadful watch. Women’s cricket bears no resemblance to the real thing and people who want to watch cricket and not a display of diversity vote with their feet.
We are coming out of the other side of two years of dystopian lunacy, but as has been pointed out by many on this site and elsewhere, this is but a skirmish win in a bigger war. It is not over.
Masks have to go – remember just don’t wear the bloody things, it really is very easy. Like getting into a cold swimming pool, once the water is past the gentleman’s area for the first time it’s all nice and cosy. Just do it.
Masks were done to death quite admirably by the boss’s post yesterday, but the importance of getting rid of the most visible sign of central control cannot be over emphasised.
The biggy is getting rid of the statutes (whatever they are) that underpin all this rubbish so it can never be bought back at the stroke of a pen. The indicators that they want to do this are right there in plain sight. ‘Future variants, ‘kept in our back pockets’, ‘upcoming winter’ etc etc. No, no, no, a thousand times no.
I can (and do) walk imperiously into Bunnings barefaced but I cannot change the law. We need to find some political lever that can get rid of this evil so it can never come back.
This will be very difficult and I don’t know how it can be done. Wellington lawn protest v2.0 is not currently a viable option I would think. And all this nonsense lasting two years has achieved what? On the virus response front, I would suggest absolutely nothing. There is no evidence anywhere in the world that pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) – lockdowns, social distancing, masks and their ilk – have achieved any reduction in viral transmission.
‘Vaccines’ have been shown to achieve nothing in stopping transmission (have you worked out the difference between relative risk reduction and absolute risk reduction yet, Prime Minister?) and only marginal dropping in death rates in the elderly and infirm.
All these dystopian attacks on our freedoms have achieved nothing, nix, nada, zip. But goodness me they have trashed the very fabric of the country. Businesses ruined, non COVID health statistics way out of where they should be, ruined family relationships (if you allowed this to happen), we are told that mental health is all over the show and we have an economic recession coming at us like a freight train.
All this mess has to be sorted out by the arts graduate ideologues who inadvertently (being kind) created it in the first place. Great. But still, I have other joys in my life. I now have more grandchildren than I had this time last week. And I don’t really care about the golf much any more, either.
