Based on the work of child psychologist Louise Porter, 20% of children are ‘high spirited’ or ‘ non-conformist’. They need to feel a sense of agency and control over their own lives, so reward and punishment do not work in the same way as for the majority. These children grow up into adults, and need to feel appealed to and partnered with – not dictated to.

At their best, we associate these stubborn adults with leaders and trail blazers. At their worst, we associate them with non-conformist rule breakers and misfits. A true leader would unite and lead both cohorts by using a dynamic approach.
