At first glance, it appears that the Stuff journalist has got the maths wrong as $52,800 is 10% of Bloomfield’s salary not 20%.
However further reading reveals that the pay cut is for only 6 months. So it is not a stuff up but it is a very deceptive way to report on it.
The sound bite 20% sounds better and distorts the truth. The MSM’s message is one of spin and appearances.
My instant reaction on reading too fast was that Stuff had made a mistake. 99% of Joe Public would read it too fast and say, “Wow, our Jacinda is giving up 20% of her pay.” I haven’t looked into it but I know her “leadership” on this issue followed that of some of the corporates. It would be interesting to check their %s and the timeframe. Call me cynical, I guess. I hate spin.
