So the Pike River game is up. For some reason best known to himself Andrew Little has chosen now to ‘fess up and state what the rest of us knew all along. That the recovery of the bodies from the Pike River mine is, to use Mr Little’s word, “impractical”. The more honest word to use is “impossible”. It is worth remembering that Mr Little at the time of the disaster was Secretary of the EPMU and, despite overwhelming evidence that there was something wrong at the mine, did nothing.
What we have had here is the disgraceful politicisation of a tragic event. Along with Andrew Little we had Winston Peters also mining for votes prior to the last election. He offered to be the first one in, so supposedly sure was he that bodies would be found. You have to ask if these people have a conscience, and if so, how does it function? To promise something when you know the chance of achieving that promise is next to negligible is despicable behaviour.
The picture you are painting is that you will do anything for votes. Nothing is beneath you. This has taken politics to a new level of low. Those involved in this appalling farce should be hanging their heads in shame. But that won’t happen. Instead we are seeing excuses trotted out and weasel words of what “I actually said” or “what I really meant” or “I never implied” etc. It’s sickening to observe the behaviour of some of today’s politicians.
The families of those who lost their lives have been completely let down and conned. It was always the case that it would take more money than was fiscally responsible to get anywhere near to the aim of retrieving any human remains. I haven’t heard a lot from them but had it been National making the announcement I’m sure there would have been more squealing than a herd of pigs. These people are Labour to the point of insanity. Interestingly there is also mining parlance to describe a group of pigs. It is a drift.
A thought to finish on. Could it have been National’s appointment of Judith Collins as Pike River Recovery spokesperson that was responsible for the timing of the announcement? I wouldn’t be at all surprised. Anything to avoid the Twyford treatment.
