Etymology : French, from vice- + reine queen, from Old French, from Latin regina, feminine of reg-, rex king. A viceroy is the governor of a country or province who rules as the representative of a king or sovereign. Viceroy was first used in 1524 but vicereine did not appear until 300 years later. The most prominent vicereine in reasonably recent history was Lady Edwina Mountbatten wife of the last Viceroy of India until Independence in 1947.
