It is obvious the Labour Party propaganda wing has motivated their perpetual “Letters to the Editor” scribes into action. You can always tell who they are simply because they use the same cliché-littered dialogue as their paymasters. The latest, of course, is “saving lives”. “How can you put a price on a life?”, “Is money more important than lives?” and on it goes. I would love to respond to these comments, but when I have submitted correspondence to either Stuff or the NZ Herald in the past, my contribution has been censored to the rubbish bin.
Of course we are reminded daily by our PM that her committed strategy is focused on saving lives, and we all know the extravagant claims made concerning the tens of thousands of lives that have been spared due to this pledge. This is a load of bollocks of course. Of the 1,078 confirmed cases only a handful have been hospitalised and the rest have made, or are making, an uneventful recovery in their homes. The nine deaths that have occurred were amongst a demographic that sadly was predictable. It could be suggested that a virus of any hue may have had the same saddening outcome.
The point I’m trying to make is that those under seventy, who are infected, appear to make an unproblematic recovery with little outside intervention other than isolation. Were their lives saved because of the lockdown? I believe their lives were never at risk. I believe that the lockdown should have only been applied to those over 70 and those who presented symptoms. The rest of the community could have got on with life as usual. Yes, more may have caught the virus but I doubt any of them would have died exclusively from the infection.
If our PM can claim responsibility for saving thousands of lives, she must also claim responsibility for the nine deaths to date.
Of course, she can’t be held accountable for those deaths any more than she can claim Sainthood for saving of thousands of lives.
