The passage of the new security bill – backed by the coalition and even the Labour Party – should have been a rare moment of unity on a matter that transcends political tribes. New Zealand’s safety, our intelligence partnerships and our ability to work seamlessly with longstanding allies are not abstract ideals: they are the daily machinery that keeps the country secure.
And yet, Te Pāti Māori and the Greens stood in absolute, immovable, denial. No hesitation. Not scrutiny. Just everyday ignorance and denial.
