Today in history is a place for you early risers to exercise your brains as you wait for the day to begin. Please, by all means, bring your own bits of history to the comments section and add your memories of what YOU did on this day however many years ago.
The beauty of an early morning historical post is that the date can mean the event happened today “our time” or today “other side of the world” time.
From the life and death of Plato through to the latest most recent history as it happens, we intend on bringing you stimulating and educational historical knowledge.
14th June
2017: Fire engulfs the Grenfell Tower in London, shortly before 1.00am. The 24 story building would claim 71 lives and scores of injuries. It apparently started in a Hotpoint fridge freezer in an apartment on the 4th floor.
1789: The “HMS Bounty” mutiny survivors, Captain William Bligh and 18 others reach Timor after seven weeks, and 4000 miles, in a small open boat.
1985: TWA Flight 847 is hijacked by Hezbollah terrorists. The flight was from Athens to Rome and was forced to land in Beirut. In the end, only 1 person would lose their life.
1381: The Peasants Revolt, led by Wat Tyler reaches it’s climax when the rebels plunder and burn the Tower of London and kill the Archbishop of Canterbury.
1984: Prime Minister Robert Muldoon called a snap election. It did not end well for National.
