Today in history is a place for you early risers to exercise your brains as you wait for the day to begin. Please, by all means, bring your own bits of history to the comments section and add your memories of what YOU did on this day however many years ago.
The beauty of an early morning historical post is that the date can mean the event happened today “our time” or today “other side of the world” time.

16th June
1963: Aboard Vostok 6, Soviet Cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova, becomes the first woman in space. After 48 orbits and 71 hours, she returns having spent more time in space than all US astronauts combined to that date.
1896: A tsunami kills more than 20,000 Japanese after an earthquake 120 miles east of Honshu in the Japan Trench.
455: Rome is sacked by the Vandal army.
1952: “Anne Frank: Diary of a Young Girl” is published in the United States.
1923: A generation after the hanging of Minnie Dean, the murder trial of Daniel and Martha Cooper reveals that “baby farming” and illegal abortions are still regarded as a viable solution to unwanted babies in NZ. Martha was cleared of all charges but Daniel Cooper was hanged at the Terrace Gaol in Wellington.
